Job Description
An Automotive Mechanic for a steel manufacturing company is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and troubleshooting of the plant's mobile equipment, heavy vehicles, and material handling fleet (e.g., cranes, forklifts, dumpers, Hydra) to ensure maximum uptime and safety. This role bridges traditional automotive repair with heavy industrial, diesel, and hydraulic maintenance in a high-demand, rugged workplace.

- Diagnostics & Troubleshooting: Inspect and diagnose electrical, hydraulic, and mechanical issues using diagnostic tools and software to minimize equipment downtime.
- Component Repair: Overhaul or replace engine parts, transmissions, brake systems, and steering mechanisms.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere strictly to industrial safety protocols, including LOTO (Lockout/Tagout), while operating in a manufacturing environment.
- Documentation & Reporting: Maintain accurate records of vehicle service, fuel consumption, repairs, and parts inventory.
- Welding & Fabrication: Perform minor welding and fabrication tasks to repair vehicle bodies or attachments.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Experience: Proven experience (typically 2-5+ years) as an auto or diesel mechanic, with preference for experience in heavy equipment.
- Technical Knowledge: Strong understanding of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and electrical systems.
- Education: High school diploma or equivalent; vocational training or ASE certifications are highly preferred.
- License: Valid driver's license (Commercial Driver's License - CDL - may be required for operating heavy vehicles).
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy parts (50+ lbs), work in varying temperatures, and stand/kneel for extended periods.
- Safety Mindset: Familiarity with OSHA standards and safe working procedures in a plant environment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with specific industrial equipment like forklifts (propane/diesel), loaders, or cranes.
- Knowledge of SAP or similar computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
Working Conditions
- The work environment involves exposure to fumes, dust, and loud noise typical of a steel plant.
- Flexibility to work in shifts (day/night) and weekends is often required.
