A fleet manager oversees an organization's vehicle operations, balancing safety, efficiency, and cost. They manage the entire lifecycle of a commercial fleet—from vehicle procurement and preventive maintenance to driver management and compliance. Their ultimate goal is to maximize uptime, reduce risk, and minimize operational costs.

Core Responsibilities

Maintenance & Uptime: Establish preventive maintenance schedules, coordinate mechanical repairs, and minimize vehicle downtime.
Safety & Compliance: Ensure all drivers and vehicles comply with national transportation, environmental, and safety regulations (e.g., DOT, OSHA compliance).
Cost & Budget Management: Develop annual operating budgets, track fuel consumption, and negotiate contracts with vendors and mechanics.
Driver & Route Management: Recruit, train, and supervise drivers. Optimize daily routing and dispatch to ensure on-time deliveries.
Data & Technology: Utilize fleet management software, GPS telematics, and Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs) to track vehicle health, fuel usage, and driver behavior.
Asset Lifecycle: Manage vehicle acquisition, specification, and procurement, as well as the disposal and remarketing of older assets.
